Deck & Fence Staining in the Seattle–Tacoma Area
A flawless paint job, on time, at the price we quoted — or you don’t pay the balance.
Western Washington is paradise for trees and purgatory for the wood we build out of them. Decks and fences here fight rain, moss, and UV all year — and bare or failing finish loses that fight fast.
Good staining is mostly good prep: clean the wood, brighten it, let it dry to the right moisture level, then seal it. We bring a moisture meter, not a guess.
What’s included
- Pressure wash, clean, and wood brightener treatment
- Moss and mildew removal (a PNW specialty, unfortunately)
- Moisture-meter check before any stain goes down
- Transparent, semi-transparent, or solid stains — we’ll help you choose
- Decks, fences, pergolas, railings, and stairs
- Sanding of splintered boards and popped-nail fixes
The details that make the difference
We stain dry wood, period
Stain over damp wood and it peels within a year. We check moisture content with a meter and wait for the right window — that patience is most of the warranty.
The right opacity for your wood
Newer cedar deserves a transparent or semi-transparent stain that shows grain. Older, patched-up wood often looks best in a solid. We’ll show you samples on your actual deck.
Moss is not a finish
We remove it, treat it, and seal against it coming back fast. Your north-facing fence line will thank you.
Deck & Fence questions, straight answers
Stain or paint for a deck?
Stain, almost always. It penetrates instead of filming over the wood, so it wears gracefully instead of peeling, and it’s far easier to refresh. Paint on a walking surface in our climate is a maintenance trap.
How often do decks need re-staining in the PNW?
Transparent stains every 2–3 years, semi-transparent every 3–4, solids every 5 or so. Sun exposure and tree cover swing it — a shaded north deck and a south-facing one age completely differently.
What time of year can you stain?
Late spring through early fall, same as exterior painting — we need dry wood and a couple of rain-free days for curing. We check the forecast and your wood’s actual moisture before committing.
Is pressure washing included?
Yes — cleaning and brightening are part of every staining quote, not extras. Stain applied over gray, dirty wood just seals the dirt in.
